This park was built as reparation for the way the Chinese were treated who were brought to Tacoma to do some work on the railroad. Once the work was complete, they were basically run out of town. There is more to the story but the interesting thing in the photo is the "pagoda" is called a "ting". This park was expensive to build and the Chinese government gave the ting to the city for the park. Installation and all that the city had to pay amounted to a great deal of money which prompted one Tacoman to write to the editor in sum: "No-ting in life is free."
